Overview
The UK Home Office has officially published a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules on 14 October 2025, bringing significant updates that directly impact international students and recent graduates.
These changes focus on two key areas:
- An increase in maintenance funds required for student visa applications.
- A reduction in the Graduate Route visa duration for certain applicants from January 2027.
Below is a breakdown of the updates and what they mean for current and prospective students.
1. Increased Maintenance Requirements for Students
Effective Date: 11 November 2025
Starting 11 November 2025, international students applying under the Student Route will need to show higher financial proof to meet the UK’s maintenance requirement.
New Financial Thresholds:
- £1,529 per month for students studying in London (up to 9 months)
- £1,171 per month for students studying outside London (up to 9 months)
This means applicants must demonstrate they have enough funds to cover living expenses for up to nine months, depending on where they will study.
Accommodation Offset:
Students can now offset up to £1,529 for accommodation costs (previously lower), aligning with the updated maintenance figures.
2. Graduate Route Visa Changes
Effective Date: 1 January 2027
The UK Government has also confirmed a change to the Graduate Route visa, which allows international students to remain in the UK after completing their studies to work or look for work.
Key Updates:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree holders will now receive 18 months of post-study work permission (previously 2 years).
- PhD and doctoral graduates remain unaffected and will continue to receive 3 years of post-study permission.
This policy adjustment was originally forecast in the Immigration White Paper (May 2025) and is now officially scheduled to take effect from January 2027.
Importantly, the new rule does not affect students who apply for the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027. If you apply before that date, you will still be eligible for the full 2-year duration.
What This Means for International Students
These updates are part of the UK Government’s continued effort to ensure international students are financially prepared and aligned with the country’s evolving immigration strategy.
If you’re planning to apply to a UK university or extend your visa, here’s what to do:
Plan ahead financially. Make sure you meet the new maintenance threshold before applying after November 2025.
Apply early for the Graduate Route. If eligible, consider applying before January 2027 to benefit from the current 2-year stay.
Stay informed. Immigration rules are updated frequently, so keep in touch with your institution’s international office or a trusted visa adviser.
Final Thoughts
While these changes may seem challenging, they also highlight the UK’s commitment to maintaining a balanced, skilled international student community.
With proper planning and guidance, you can still take full advantage of the UK’s world-class education system and post-study opportunities.
